Publication Fund – Gold Journals

Since 2018, the University of Greifswald has provided its members with a publication fund to finance journal articles as part of the DFG funding programme ‘Open Access Publication Costs’.
For publications resulting from DFG-funding, the DFG project number must be mentioned in the funding acknowledgement (the amount of DFG funding for our OA Publication Fund depends on this).
More information about acknowledgement and affiliation here.

For articles in Gold Open Access journals published by BMJ, Cambridge University Press, IOP, Karger and RSC, the publication costs are covered by the Open Access transformative agreements negotiated by the university.
2. Funding Criteria
- The publication must be a research article.
- The publication must appear in a Gold Open Access journal in which all articles are immediately available in Open Access and which applies strict quality assurance procedures recognised in the respective field. A non-exhaustive overview of such Open Access journals, organised by subject area, can be found here: Directory of Open Access Journals
- The corresponding author responsible for payment is a member of the University of Greifswald or the University Medicine Greifswald, and this affiliation is stated as the primary affiliation in the publication.
- The research on which the article is based must have been carried out at the University of Greifswald or University Medicine Greifswald.
- Please mention the funding provided by the University of Greifswald in the Funding Acknowledgement, e.g. ‘Support for the publication fee was provided by the University of Greifswald's publication fund’. More information on affiliation and acknowledgements can be found here.
- The publication fee cannot be covered entirely by third-party funds.
- The article will be published immediately in Open Access under a CC licence. If possible, the CC BY licence should be selected here. Further information on licences and copyright can be found here.
- The funded publication will also be uploaded to the institutional repository (Publikationsserver) of the University of Greifswald.
3. Funding
From 2025 to 2027, the Open Access publication costs in OA Gold journals will continue to be subsidised proportionately from DFG funds.
3.1 For Members of the University of Greifswald
In addition to the DFG funds, the UG will provide € 60,000 in central funding for Open Access articles in 2026. Additional funds will be provided by the faculties to cover the Open Access publication costs for articles, based on the previous year's shares. Please note that choosing a journal with high APCs will result in a higher share of costs for your faculty next year. Each faculty decides for itself whether to allocate these costs internally.
3.2 For Members of the University Medicine
The UMG allocates the own contribution costs of the DFG-funded publication fund to the individual institutes:
- From 2025 to 2027, as before, € 985 (including VAT) per article will be financed from the DFG-funded publication fund.
- The entire invoice amount will initially be pre-financed centrally. Afterwards, the remaining balance will be booked to the cost centre of the relevant UMG institution. The institution's share of the publication costs is calculated as follows: Own contribution = invoice total (convert to euros if necessary) + 19% VAT - € 985 funding (Exception: Only in the case of German publishers VAT is already included in the invoice amount, so that the own contribution is the invoice amount minus € 985 euro funding).
- When submitting the invoice, the facility ID must be specified.
4. Funding Proceedings or Application
4.1 Without Application
MDPI, Frontiers, Elsevier, Springer, Taylor & Francis and Wiley invoice the university centrally. The above-mentioned funding limits and billing procedures apply depending on the faculty. The authors will receive an email from our Open Access team.
4.2 Application
For Gold Open Access publications with other publishers an application must still be submitted:
