Publication fund
The University of Greifswald offers funding from the DFG Publication fund for journal articles published by university staff. The eligibility criteria for the DFG fund are the following:
1. Eligibility criteria
- The publication must be a research article.
- The publication must be released in a true open access journal that applies rigorous quality assurance procedures recognized in the subject. An overview of such Open Access journals, broken down by subject but by no means exhaustive, can be found here: Directory of Open Access Journals
- The corresponding author is a member of the University of Greifswald or the University Medicine Greifswald, and the affiliation is evident in the publication.
- The research on which the article is based must have been carried out at the University of Greifswald or the University Medicine Greifswald.
- The APC cannot be covered entirely by third-party funds.
- The article will be immediately released as an open access publication under a CC license. If possible, the CC BY license should be selected as it corresponds to the recommendation of the Berlin Declaration which the University of Greifswald signed in 2016.
- The funded publication is also stored on the institutional repository (Publikationsserver) of the University of Greifswald.
If you have any questions about our funding conditions, please contact our OA team at openaccessuni-greifswaldde.
2. Funding
In 2024, the Open Access publication costs in OA Gold Journals will be funded proportionately from DFG funds. Costs in excess of the funding amount must be paid as a personal contribution.
2.1 for members of the university
- The publication charges are funded up to an amount of EUR 2,000 (incl. tax) from the publication fund.
- If the publication charge of an article is higher, the remaining amount must be financed from other funds. When submitting the invoice, information on the remaining financing must be provided, otherwise no proportionate funding can be given. In the case of co-financing, the own contribution to the publication costs is calculated as follows: Own contribution = invoice amount (convert into euros if necessary) + 19% VAT – EUR 2,000 subsidy (exception: VAT is only included in the invoice total for German publishers, so that the own contribution is the invoice total minus EUR 2,000 in funding.)
- For the MNF, the costs exceeding the subsidy will be covered by the faculty to simplify the process. Please be advised that these costs may be offset with the 2025 budget.
- NEW: From 2024, the funding cap will also apply to Gold OA journals that fall under the new DEAL contracts with Elsevier, Springer (including BMC) and Wiley.
2.2 for members of the university medicine
- In 2024 each article will be subsidized with EUR 985 from the DFG-funded publication fund.
- The entire publication costs are initially pre-financed centrally. The amount remaining after deducting the subsidy is subsequently posted to the cost center of the relevant UMG institution. The remaining amount can be calculated as invoice total + 19% VAT - EUR 985 subsidy. (exception: VAT is only included in the invoice total for German publishers, so that the remaining amount is the invoice total minus EUR 985 in funding.)
- Therefor, it is mandatory to enter the facility ID.
3. Funding proceedings or application
3.1. Without application
MDPI, Frontiers, Elsevier, Springer, Taylor & Francis and Wiley invoice the university centrally. The above-mentioned funding limits and billing procedures apply depending on the faculty. The authors will receive an email from our OA team.
3.2. Application
For Gold OA publications with other publishers an application must still be submitted:
Application for open access funding for members of the university
Application for open access funding for members of the university medicine
Third-party-funding
For articles in journals with central invoicing you will receive an email from our OA team regarding possible third party funding.
