Acknowledgement and Affiliation
Using Funding Acknowledgements Correctly
Financial support for research projects (research funding) and the resulting publications by funding agencies (publication funding) is indicated by means of standardised funding acknowledgements.
The funding acknowledgement documents the eligibility for funding of the research on which the publication is based. This is particularly important because bibliographic databases such as Web of Science incorporate existing funding information into the publication metadata. In addition, funding acknowledgements support scientific reputation management, as the performance of researchers and institutions is also measured by their success in attracting third-party funding. Funding acknowledgements are increasingly becoming an important part of open science and are important for monitoring publication costs at the University of Greifswald.
For publications resulting from DFG-funding, the DFG project number must be mentioned in the funding acknowledgment (the amount of DFG-funding for our OA publication fund depends on this).
Please mention in every publication funded through the publication fund that you have received such funding from the UG: “Support for the publication fee was provided by University of Greifswald's publication fund.”
Please note the DFG's guidelines on funding acknowledgements.
Projektergebnisse, die aus mit DFG-Mitteln finanzierten Projekten resultieren, müssen laut den einen Hinweis auf die DFG-Förderung in folgender Form enthalten:
According to the guidelines (German) for the use of funds, project results emerging from projects funded by the DFG must include a reference to DFG funding in the following form:
“Gefördert durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) – [project number(s)]”
beziehungsweise auf Englisch:
“Funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) – [project number(s)]”
The project number can be found in the letter of approval or in the GEPRIS project information system. If a publication is based on several DFG projects, all project numbers involved must be indicated and separated by semicolons.
Please do not include the internal reference number (letter-number combination based on your last name).
European Union
Requirements regarding funding acknowledgements also apply to projects funded by the European Union (EU). The EU requirements apply to all measures relating to the dissemination and communication of the funded project, as well as to infrastructure established, equipment purchased, and results published within the framework of the project.
The use of a notice expressing the extent of EU funding is mandatory:
For full EU funding: “Funded by the European Union”
For partial EU funding: “Co-funded by the European Union”
An EU emblem must also be placed to the left of the text – suitable templates can be found on the EU website.
Correctly Stating Your Affiliation
Similar to the funding acknowledgement, the correct indication of one's affiliation contributes to the traceability of research activities, transparent monitoring and open science. It is therefore important that members of the University of Greifswald and the University Medicine Greifswald provide correct affiliation details and indicate their affiliation to the relevant institution in a specified, uniform format. The University of Greifswald's affiliation guidelines regulate a standardised format for stating affiliation.
